Common Fears In Pregnancy?

You’re pregnant! You have been waiting for this moment for a long time, but you have this odd feeling…

What is on your mind: joy, excitement, anticipation… or fear? FEAR of childbirth is not uncommon. So, be open with yourself and think about your feelings.

Though fear of labor and birth is not a highly studied topic in the United States, some studies show that 50% of women in the U.S. suffer significant fear when thinking about childbirth! That means that approximately 2 million women are pregnant right now and are filled with fear.

The research studies are a bit skewed, which means that it is probably MORE than 50%. And the fear of baby’s birth-day is a problem that needs to be addressed.

Yes, it definitely needs to be addressed. Fear does not only affect Mama in pregnancy, but it also affects baby.

Fear can lead to long and challenging labor, arrest of labor, greater risk for C-Section, and postpartum blues.

These are terrible effects from something that can be managed. You just need someone to put the resource for help in your hand.

First, it is important to think about your own fears (brainstorm).

Many women think about…

  • PAIN
  • Baby’s health and safety
  • Complications in labor
  • Ability to communicate needs with the healthcare providers
  • Not feeling heard and having their birth plan respected
  • Not understanding their options
  • Not knowing where baby goes after delivery
  • And the list continues…

Healthcare providers absolutely know that your emotional needs are important. However, obstetricians and midwives are busy and don’t spend time caring for the psychosocial aspect of their patient’s childbirth experience.

This means that your doctor knows that you have fears about labor, but he/she just doesn’t have time to help you cope or overcome those fears.

So, what do you do? Well, if you are anything like me, your probably start searching the internet for answers. The internet is filled with more information than necessary, and then you get more overwhelmed and scared.
