1. Know that you can do it!

*Benefits for mom and baby

-Fewer illnesses, reduced risk for SIDS, strong bones, and bonding!

-Body back to pre-pregnant state, reduced risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer

–The size and shape of a woman’s breast has nothing to do with the amount of milk it can produce, and only very rarely has to do with the success of breastfeeding.

2. Understand how it works

-Colostrum – high fat, vitamins, laxative

-Milk production 2-3 days after birth in response to stimulation and stretching with sucking for milk production and let-down (warm, tingling, achy feeling as high fat milk moves to nipple)

3. Mix schedule with no schedule

-Clock vs. cues

-Every 2 hours (don’t rush feed) and no longer than 4 hours

-Cluster feeding is normal

-Baby is ready to eat: Lip smacking, rooting…crying

4. Get a good position and latch

-Baby to mom, chin touch and wide mouth (fish lips with all of areola)

-Use fish hook to remove baby from breast and try again

-Success: no pain, swallowing noise not slurping, satisfied baby

5. Care for your breasts

– check latch, express breastmilk for dryness, don’t wash with soap, open to air, nipple shield, silverettes

6. Surround yourself with help – Lactation consultant, support group, mom/sister/friends
