First, a little about me. I am a Board-Certified OB/GYN. I have been caring for pregnant women for over 25 years, and now I am want to provide easily accessible information for you at the touch of your finger.

I want your pregnancy to start off right. It is so important to take vitamins as early as possible. Honestly, you should be taking vitamins before you conceive (3 months prior to conception is optimal). This will ensure that you have the right nutrients in your body from the moment your baby begins developing.

If you find out you are pregnant, and it was unplanned, then start taking your prenatal vitamin immediately.

There are many important ingredients in prenatal vitamins, but these 5 are the ones you want to make sure are getting EVERYDAY.

ONE: Folic Acid / Folate 400 – 800 mcg (micrograms)

Folic acid is important in the development of your baby’s brain and spinal cord. It is very important to take this prior to conception, if possible!

TWO: Iodine 150 mcg (micrograms)

Iodine is important in your baby’s brain development, and Mama, you really need it too. As a woman develops in her pregnancy she will have increased stress on her thyroid gland (the gland in your neck). If not enough iodine is consumed then the thyroid gland cannot function properly. This puts you at an increased risk for preterm labor, miscarriage, and still-birth (babies dying inside of the womb).

THREE: Choline 400 – 450 mg

Choline can be found in many of the foods you eat like eggs, liver, legumes, etc…. However, most women don’t get enough choline from food sources. Take your prenatal vitamin to supplement the missing choline.

*Video states micrograms (mcg). This is an error. Mg is the recommended dose. 

FOUR: Vitamin D 1000 – 4000 IUs (international units)

Vitamin D has many functions in the body, immunity to name one. Many women north of the Mason-Dixon line in the United States don’t get enough sunshine in their day. Sun is very important when it comes to Vitamin D in the body. So, get outside more and be sure to take your supplement.

FIVE: Iron 20 – 30 mg (milligrams) 

Iron is very important in your red blood cells functioning to transfer oxygen to your body, and to your baby. Eat iron rich foods such as red meat, spinach, and eggs. But don’t forget your vitamin.

Those five items are very important to consume on a daily basis. 

I have identified one prenatal vitamin that is very good. It is called MegaFood Baby and Me 2. This prenatal vitamin has all of the elements we discussed, but it does not have quite enough choline (it has 300 mg of choline per daily serving).

So, how do you get that extra choline you need? You could supplement. Or eat eggs. In fact, if you eat three eggs per day then could skip the choline supplement. So, take your MegaFood Baby & Me prenatal vitamin, and eat one egg per day to get what you need in your prenatal vitamin.
