Dr. Boyd talks about Ectopic pregnancy and your options moving forward.
First, understand that this is a pregnancy. The problem is that the pregnancy is in the wrong location. The word ectopic simply means, outside of the uterus.
There are three different locations where an ectopic pregnancy can occur:
- Fallopian tube (the most common place)
- Ovary (rare)
- Abdomen (rare)
* Dr. Boyd has never seen an ovarian or abdominal pregnancy in his practice.
So, for the majority of doctors, the term ectopic pregnancy is referring to a pregnancy in the fallopian tube. Unfortunately, the pregnancy is not viable in this situation. The fallopian tube is too small, and the pregnancy cannot be transferred to the uterus.
One of two things will happen in this situation. Either the fallopian tube will rupture as the baby grows, or the baby will dissolve on its own and the products of conception will go away over time. Those are the only two scenarios that exist.
Your doctor will talk to you about your treatment options:
- Methotrexate (medication in the form of an injection)
- Surgery
- Waiting to see if the pregnancy dissolves on its own
Make sure you are supported in this time of grief. Talk to your family and consult with your healthcare provider. This is a hard road to walk down, and we want to support you in any way that we can.
