Before we dive deep into the different pain management techniques we are going to look at the two ways you can birth your baby.
Technically there are only two ways to birth your baby: C-Section or vaginal delivery
There is, however assisted vaginal delivery by natural or medical induction, episiotomy, amniotomy, forceps extraction, and vacuum extraction (to name a few). And there are a few places to deliver your baby such as at the hospital (recommended for safety) or at home (not recommended for safety).
But let’s really get into the ways to deal with the pain of labor and childbirth. I am going to talk about a few of the different birthing techniques to decrease and cope with pain during labor and delivery.
Before I go any further, I want to mention my FREE Natural Birth Workbook! This 4 Step Process is a great start if you are considering a med-free birth. Click the button below to download the workbook…
First, yoga.
Yoga can help you learn to control your main respiratory muscles and diaphragm through breathing techniques and relaxation. You will learn and practice postures for use during labor. The breathing and relaxation techniques are useful during childbirth to help you remain calm during contractions, facilitate dilation of the cervix, and ease pushing.
Second, the Lamaze Method.
This method is about a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivery through evidence-based education. The goal is for mom and dad to feel confident, supported, and powerful. They are free to ask questions, make decisions, and work out their own story of childbirth. This method teaches Mom how to decrease unnecessary hospital interventions and improve outcomes. Lamaze consists of childbirth education classes, relaxation techniques, breathing techniques, and emotional support.
Third, the Bradley Method.
This is known as the husband-coached natural childbirth. This method says that education, preparation, and a coach can help mom give birth naturally. Mom must increase self-awareness, deal with the stress of labor, and trust her body. Mom learns about nutrition, exercise, breathing, and relaxation. This method teaches mom to be her own advocate in ways that decrease risk factors and interventions. There are books that teach this method, but the method promotes mom and dad attending a series of 12 weeks of classes before baby’s birth-day.
Fourth, the Bonapace Method.
This method teaches control of pain through massage, breathing, and visualization with a focus on trust. The goal is to decrease pain, decrease unnecessary interventions, and foster support from dad. This is an online class that can be taken at any time during pregnancy.
Fifth, hypnobirthing.
This is a bit out there for me to be talking about for birthing techniques. This method states: “In the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.” You will experience a mix of daydreaming and focusing. This method is to help you trust birth and release all fear and limiting thoughts.
Last, the PEAR Process at Pearently.
