Question of the day: Do I need a pap smear before I get pregnant?
The simple answer is “No”.
Hey, Dr. Boyd here, OB/GYN, and I have some info for you about pap smears.
If you have had a pap smear in the past three years. If it has been longer than 3 years, then you should consider having a pap smear again before getting pregnant.
If you have had an abnormal pap smear in the past, and it has been more than one year since your last pap smear, then I would encourage you to see your healthcare provider to have a pap smear performed before you get pregnant.
Unfortunately, many women have STIs (sexually transmitted infections), and they don’t even know they carry these infections. I encourage you to be evaluated prior to pregnancy if you have any concerns about STIs. Chlamydia, for example, is a very common STI and you definitely need to be evaluated for the safety of you and your baby.
Treating STIs prior to pregnancy will decrease your risk of developing an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside of the uterus such as a tubal pregnancy). So, if you have any concerns about STIs or any concerns about an abnormal pap smear please see your healthcare provider before getting pregnant.
We wish you the best on your journey towards pregnancy. When you get pregnant, delivery day will come faster than you expect. Prep work is so important for a smooth and successful vaginal birth.
