First off, let me say that food is a very personal thing.
We bond over food, we celebrate over food, we feast, we diet, we have cravings, and we have diversions.
A baby is a little bit different when it comes to food. Babies eat to survive and grow. Babies don’t crave foods, and babies will never eat when they are not hungry.
As children develop in society, they learn about food, their taste buds change, and they begin to like or dislike different foods.
With that said, it is very important as a mother to be the leader of healthy food choices. It is important to have healthy eating habits if we wish for our children to be healthy, happy, and have good eating habits.
I know how important it is to care for my body, and I took this into my pregnancy as I was growing a baby inside of my body. My baby’s health was in direct relation to my health.
Adults and infants are susceptible to harm caused by the pesticides. Babies especially, with their tiny little bodies need to limit their intake of conventional foods with pesticide residues (to limit the amount of chemicals in their bodies).
So, I choose to eat organic food, I chose to eat organic food while I was pregnant, and now choose to feed my baby organic foods.
Organic foods are grown and processed without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Conventional farmers on the other hand use pesticides...
They say they do this to protect their crops from molds, insects and diseases (crops can be protected in other ways without the use of the pesticides). The sprays leave residue on produce that is consumed with the food.
Foods that are grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers are considered organic. Organic produce does carry some residue from neighboring farms, but they carry significantly fewer pesticide residues than conventional produce does.
You can make your baby his or her own food from scratch with frozen fruits and vegetables for the highest nutrient content.
Fruits and vegetables that are frozen contain the most nutrients as they were picked in season and stored in the freezer soon after being picked preserving the nutrients from respiration.
Cook the ingredients by steaming or roasting, add to a blender with water, breast milk, and blend. Add coconut oil, butter, or olive oil and some spices as the child grows.
Now, for those mamas that are constantly on the GO, we have some brands to thank for making organic baby foods.
Here are several baby food brands that I recommend and that my baby enjoys eating!
1. Sprout Organic
Sprout Organic Baby Food put baby food in a pouch! This makes travel SO easy. My son likes to “drink” the food for no mess meal. However, I want to warn mamas that this is not the best habit to nurture. Encourage your baby to practice eating with a spoon (but the pouch is great when a bowl and spoon are not available).
2. Beech Nut
Beech Nut has been around the block since 1931! They have a great variety of cereals and fruit & vegetable blends. I love their little glass jars that bring back a classic feel when it’s time for meals. (I try to reuse the jars where I can).
3. Plum Organics
Plum Organics provide an affordable organic food choice for your child. They have got just vegetables, just fruits, baby bowls…and my son’s favorite, little teethers to begin using his teeth with a little crunch.
4. Happy Family Organics
Happy Family Organics is a great choice for baby oatmeal and quinoa with probiotics and iron for optimal gut health and growth. I love adding this cereal thickener to my son’s veggie blends for a thick consistency. He loves it (I think).
5. Amara Organic
Amara Organic Baby Food is all about easy pack and travel. You can add breast milk, formula, water or other blends to this powdered potato kale, peas and corn, or apple baby food. Super easy.
6. Once Upon a Farm
Once Upon a Farm is that cold-pressed fresh food that your baby needs when you don’t have time to make the food from scratch. This place is all about enhancing nutrition and aid in palate development with a variety of ingredients. Super fancy.
I hope this is all helpful to you and your baby!
Happy eating.
