Now is the time to learn how to work with your natural hormones AND NOT disrupt the process. Now is the time to encourage the little chemical messengers that help you give birth naturally.

Now is the time to get ready for your birth journey. Take your next step by downloading the FREE workbook below to get Annabelle’s 4 Step Process to a birth you will love to remember.

Decisions you make about how you want your birth to happen can nurture or disrupt your body’s hormones that are important in labor and birth.

Let’s talk about the steps your body takes to birth your baby. These steps have to do with the hormones in charge of the birth of your baby. A ready baby and placenta might be what triggers labor. Your baby is going to release some chemicals that tell your body that he or she is ready to be born.

During this time, your body is going to release prostaglandins that help your cervix soften, open, and thin out.

Once your body and baby are ready, labor will begin!

Natural oxytocin increases during pregnancy, releases in pulses during labor, and peaks with birth of your baby. It is released into circulation for uterine contractions and released in cerebrospinal fluid to influence the brain for better bonding with baby.

Oxytocin will begin to be released in waves or pulses as stated above. Oxytocin gives mom nurturing behavior. Oxytocin evokes feelings of trust, empathy, calmness, contentment and reduces anxiety and fear.

Oxytocin…causes contractions, and those contractions lead to cervical change that speeds labor along.

Unfortunately, oxytocin can be disrupted by epidural analgesia because of the actual medication as well as the fact that it takes away mom’s pain (no pain = no oxytocin)

Synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin) is often given to moms that have epidurals placed during labor. Pitocin is released into circulation to cause contractions, but it is not released into the cerebrospinal fluid. This steals the feelings of trust, empathy, calmness, and contentment from mom during childbirth.

Endorphins are released during natural childbirth in response to oxytocin and pain. Endorphins give mom an altered state of consciousness to help her cope with labor pain. They help mom feel alert and happy after birth.

Unfortunately, endorphins are also disrupted by epidural analgesia and the drop in endorphins is thought to cause postpartum blues.

Adrenaline can be released during labor if mom feels anxious and unsafe. Adrenaline is released for survival mode, and it can slow labor until mom can get into a safe environment for birth. Unfortunately, adrenaline can slow labor, cause more pain, and distress baby. Adrenaline released in the first stage of labor is not desirable.

However, it is good if a little bit of adrenaline is released during the second stage of labor (pushing). It gives mom a burst of energy to effectively push.

We want to learn as Mamas how to promote these hormones at the right times during childbirth.

How to promote these hormones?

  • Preparedness of mind and a good supportive team (birth coach)
  • Calm, quiet, dark environment at home and at your birthing location
    • What is your environment at home and at a birthing location?
    • Are you prepared to say NO to interventions that make you feel uncomfortable or put you in more pain?
  • Say “NO” to pain-reducing medications like the epidural.

Now is the time to get ready for your birth journey. Take your next step by downloading the FREE workbook below to get Annabelle’s 4 Step Process to a birth you will love to remember.

How to make a written birth plan for a vaginal and med- free birth? That is what I am going to be talking about so that you can be in control of your birth experience.

Why build a plan?

I mean I am going to stop right here and ask you a question: What would happen if you went into labor and didn’t have a plan?

My mom has always said, “To not have a plan is a plan.”

If you went into labor without a plan, a lot would happen. Actually, more might happen than you ever expected or wanted to happen.

Labor will start, pain would increase, you will go to the hospital, then on comes a gown, monitors, IV, an epidural, maybe Pitocin, maybe even a C-Section delivery or assisted delivery, severe vaginal tearing, blood infusions, more Pitocin, and on on on!

This is not meant to scare you.

But it is important to think that all these things could happen in a vaginal birth with a healthy mom (no pregnancy complications).

You were born to give birth, but that doesn’t take away the fact that it has its dangers. And healthcare providers like to be on top of disasters happening. So much that they sometimes jump the gun.

This is good to some extent, but it means that you may not get the vaginal, med-free birth that you want… if you don’t take some steps today to be in charge of what you can be in charge of at birth.

That is where a plan comes into play.

A plan means that you do some prep work, and the prep work is what helps you get the birth that you desire and make the most of your circumstances when you have to adjust your birth plan.

Before I go any further, I want to mention my FREE Natural Birth Workbook! This 4 Step Process is a great start if you are considering a med-free birth. Click the button below to download the workbook…

It is vital to know that you need two different birth plans. If you don’t do this, then you run the risk of your entire birth plan being ignored by your hospital nurse upon labor and birth.

You need your birth plan and your birth plan.

Let’s talk about your birth plan first. This plan includes things like how to cope with the pain of labor while staying at home to labor as long as possible, dimmed lights, position changes, music, massage, your mantra, etc. These are things that your nurse and doctor don’t need to know about because they aren’t the ones to help you.

Your birth plan means that you write down your preferences, things that will help you labor on, and don’t really need to be discussed with the hospital care team (unless they aren’t making it easy for you to do the things you want at the hospital).

Let’s paint a picture of how birth can happen related to your birth plan:

Labor starts. The first thing to think about when labor pains begin: how am I going to labor at home until it is necessary to go? {This is so big. You will reduce your risk for C-Section by 50% if you stay home until you are at the end of the active phase of labor. This can take several hours (mine took 10 hours).}

Once those labor pains get to the point where you aren’t excited anymore, that is when you need to pull out all of the things listed on your birth plan: dimmed lights, birthing ball, and relaxation techniques with your support person (who knows your birth plan inside and out) right by your side every step of the way.

You will trek through the big contractions thinking it must be getting close to birthing time. You will get to the point where you know the contraction pain is not going to get any worse. Then you can head to the hospital.

Make sure you choose your support person and spend time prepping for birth with that support person. I will say it again, your birth plan needs to have a support person named. This support person needs to be continuous support throughout your entire labor. If your husband is it, then make sure he is ready, has dimmed lights with him, and is ready to speak up on behalf of your birth plan desire.

If your husband is not able to take on full responsibility, then hire a birth doula, or ask your mom to help. But make sure you have someone by your side the entire time.

This will reduce your risk for getting an epidural, having your labor augmented with medication, and the big on… going for a C-Section birth. Plus your positive birth memory will skyrocket.

Your birth plan needs to include what we think of as “little” things, but really are very important because they matter to you.

Not so “little” things to think about on your birth plan:

-Alternative pain relief options: massage, shower, bath, position changes

-Hospital gown, your own clothes/gown

-Personal birthing ball, hospital birthing ball

-Ability to get out of bed

-Timing to introduce baby to friends and family

Start thinking about what you want at birth, tour the hospital facility, and ask questions about hospital policy. It is time to write down your preferences at birth.

Now the birth plan for your care team.

A part of a great birth plan is to keep it simple! I am serious, you want big points that really matter to you, that you can remember, and that will make an impact when you tell your nurse.

Think about what really matters. This will take a little bit of thought and research. You want to pick three things that really matter to you, that will fulfill your deep need and desire at birth, and that the care team needs to know to make your birth experience happen.

If a vaginal, med-free birth is what you deeply desire and need, then think of three actions that you can take (with the help of your nurse and doctor) that will make that birth dream happen.

-No continuous Fetal Heart Monitoring so that mama can get in a different position for birth.

-No IV with infusion so that mama can get out of bed and move around.

-No episiotomy at birth

-Delayed cord clamping.

-Cord blood banking.

-Immediate skin-to-skin and breastfeeding.

-Gentle C-Section with immediate skin-to-skin with mom or dad if mom is not stable.

These are all things that can be thought about and researched in a deeper way. It is so important for you to write these down, think about it, talk about it with your husband and doctor, and get the birth that you desire.

Hey Mama, I am here to answer your question about how to choose a natural birth or the epidural.

First, I want to say that every Mama has a different reason for desiring a natural birth. This is a very personal decision, and the reason is very important.

The reason is what is going to help you trek through the pain with confidence and success.

Pain is scary, and pain comes with labor. We all know this. But I want to start off with saying that the pain of labor is normal and it is purposeful.

Some Mamas choose a natural birth because they are afraid of the risks associated with epidurals. Note that epidurals are very safe and standardized in the U.S. these days.

The majority of pregnant women deliver with an epidural, safely.

The epidural is anesthesia that is continuously administered in the epidural space in the Mama’s back. Its job is to give pain relief from each contraction. Mama is on bedrest the entire time the epidural is in place because it causes her legs to become numb. If you want to be up and moving around in labor, then the epidural is not a good option for you.

Your concern is about the risks associated with the epidural, and I understand your concern. There are always risks and side effects with medical interventions (example: epidural headache). But it bears repeating that epidurals are safe.

However, it does not have to be you saying “YES, I want the epidural, I can’t do it!” If you desire a natural, vaginal birth, then you can say “NO” to the epidural with confidence.

The question you have to ask yourself now is… “What is my reason behind choosing a natural birth?”

This can also be asked…

What story do you want from your birth experience?

A lot of Mamas want to connect with their bodies, and experience the bonding that occurs during the painful labor and birth.

Ask yourself what is more important to you: relief from pain or connection through labor (the hard work). This will help you discover your reason.

Before I go any further, I want to mention my FREE Natural Birth Workbook! This 4 Step Process is a great start if you are considering a med-free birth. Click the button below to download the workbook…

If you want a natural birth then you need support and preparation.

We want Mamas to be fully confident in their ability to cope with the pain of labor.

Ask yourself this question: “What is my ability to cope with stressful situations?” You have to evaluate yourself and the way you cope with the things that life throws at you. Can you cope with stress and pain in a healthy manner? If you don’t know, then we would love to help. Keep reading!

When Mamas don’t cope with pain in labor, they are often left with a bad birth memory, and this can lead to postpartum blues/depression and a strong desire to not give birth again

Coping with pain in a healthy way starts with recognizing that pain in labor is a normal process that leads to a victory. Each painful contraction leads Mom and Baby one step closer to delivery.

This pain is purposeful.

The pain is different from suffering.

Pain of labor is a physical experience, it should not be spiritual. We all know what spiritual pain feels like: death, divorce, rejection, loss, etc. This suffering feels empty and cuts to the core.

The pain that accompanies childbirth is intense, full, bubbling over, and celebratory! You are bringing life into this world, your world. WOW!

Are you getting excited about giving birth naturally?

Now is the time to recognize your need for preparation and practice before “Labor Day”.

You might need some help resetting your mind towards the goal of each painful contraction…to think of the pain as good.

You can keep a healthy mindset through each painful contraction. I know you can.

Do you want some help getting on the right track toward saying “NO” to the epidural and giving birth naturally?

I would love to help.

I have created my FREE Natural Birth Workbook just for you. This 4 Step Process is a great start if you are considering a med-free birth. Download below…

YOU CAN have a baby without an epidural! I am here to encourage you in your pursuit of a FEARLESS natural hospital birth!

First, I want to say that there is a lot of competition out there among women about their labor and delivery process. Today I want to come to you and say there is NO competition here, only encouragement. In my opinion, we women need to stick together and encourage each other because we are a powerful sex that gets to carry and deliver life into this world. What an honor.

And because of that we shouldn’t be scaring each other with competition stories. We should be lifting each other up and saying, “You can do this! What you want to do with your labor and birth process is your choice and I am going to say “go for it! You’ve got this girl!

So, now I want to talk to you a little bit about my journey and how I had a FEARLESS and beautiful labor and birth experience.

I had a very strategic path as I prepared for birth. Check out this plan in my FREE Natural Birth Workbook! This 4 Step Process is a great start if you are considering a med-free birth. Click the button below to download the workbook…

I am a nurse, birth doula, and mom. I come from a family with an OB/GYN Dad and Labor and Delivery Nurse Mom. I have a lot of useful information surrounding me.

During my pregnancy this information was super helpful, but I still had fears. I was still very anxious because this was the first time I was going to have a baby.

I was a watermelon grower, and it HIT ME: “Oh my goodness, he has to COME OUT. There is NO going back.”

With that in mind, I wanted to prepare for the mountain in front of me. I had to create a plan that was going to help me get ready for birth, but I did not know EXACTLY how I was going to do this. It was a little bit of an experiment.

I started with asking lots and lots of questions to my parents ESPECIALLY 2 months before my due date. I asked every question I could possibly think of, and I asked if there were questions I wasn’t thinking of…and there were many!

I wanted to imagine the process in my mind. I wanted to know how the contractions would feel. I wanted to know when the contractions would get stronger, when I needed to go to the hospital, what would happen when I got to the hospital…?

On and on my questions tumbled out in droves…

But let me tell you, the biggest decision I had to make was whether I was going to get an epidural or if I was not going to get an epidural.

I settled on this: “No, I do not want an epidural”.

The problem was when people would ask me about my birth plan. I would tell them, “No, I am not going to have an epidural.” Then, all of these “experienced” mothers would say, “Ok, Yeah! I didn’t want either but then when my contractions got to this point and I had labored for this many hours I said ‘I have to have one’ and I couldn’t deal with the pain anymore. So you will probably do the same thing.”

HONESTLY, I got a little tired of hearing all of the “horror stories” these moms said to me. I was discouraged by all of the times I heard, “You CAN’T do it.” It was defeating.

Then I met this ONE WOMAN. Who was about my age and had a son of her own. She asked me about my pregnancy. I started to tell her about my plans and how I was not going to have an epidural because I wanted to give birth naturally.

I told her I was getting a lot of negative feedback and I was starting to become discouraged.

She stopped me before I could even finish and she said,

“Ok, stop listening to all of that negative talk. This is a beautiful thing, and you can do it. Of course, there is a ring of fire, and it burns! But it is not as bad as everyone keeps telling you it is. And when you hold your baby it is worth it, you forget about it. Yeah you are a little bit sore, but you’re just so excited that you just bonded with your baby through all of that hard work. The sweat and the tears of pain and joy are worth it. You don’t care anymore. It is only beautiful!”

Second, find a story that will motivate you to keep your plan. I watched a movie a month before I delivered. That movie was Mama Mia 2. There is this one part in the movie where the main character is on an island in Greece, in the middle of nowhere. She is living in this old farm house, and she is all by herself.

The music starts playing.

You see her laboring, you see her walking around sweating, and then she delivers her baby.

It was so beautiful!

I walked out of the movie and told my husband, “If she can do it out in the middle of nowhere, in Greece, all by herself in a farmhouse, then I can do this in a hospital with support around me!”.

Maybe that seems a bit dramatized, and when I look back it is kind of funny because it was just a movie. She wasn’t really laboring… it was fake. But when I think about it, I know that there really ARE women around the world that are like that girl in the movie.

For thousands of years, and even today, thousands of women around the world are delivering their babies without pain medicine. There is something to be said about that kind of courage and creation.

This hard process, this hard work to bond with your baby is courageous. When your baby is delivered, there is more bonding. You worked extremely hard, but you received a prize from all of your hard work.

Me:

I didn’t get the encouragement I needed at first.

I found encouragement.

I was FEARLESS and I had the birth of my dreams.

I am sitting here, having the opportunity to tell you that this is beautiful!

For all of these reasons I created Pearently Natural Birth.

Before we dive deep into the different pain management techniques we are going to look at the two ways you can birth your baby.

Technically there are only two ways to birth your baby: C-Section or vaginal delivery

There is, however assisted vaginal delivery by natural or medical induction, episiotomy, amniotomy, forceps extraction, and vacuum extraction (to name a few). And there are a few places to deliver your baby such as at the hospital (recommended for safety) or at home (not recommended for safety).

But let’s really get into the ways to deal with the pain of labor and childbirth. I am going to talk about a few of the different birthing techniques to decrease and cope with pain during labor and delivery.

Before I go any further, I want to mention my FREE Natural Birth Workbook! This 4 Step Process is a great start if you are considering a med-free birth. Click the button below to download the workbook…

First, yoga.

Yoga can help you learn to control your main respiratory muscles and diaphragm through breathing techniques and relaxation. You will learn and practice postures for use during labor. The breathing and relaxation techniques are useful during childbirth to help you remain calm during contractions, facilitate dilation of the cervix, and ease pushing.

 Second, the Lamaze Method.

This method is about a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivery through evidence-based education. The goal is for mom and dad to feel confident, supported, and powerful. They are free to ask questions, make decisions, and work out their own story of childbirth. This method teaches Mom how to decrease unnecessary hospital interventions and improve outcomes. Lamaze consists of childbirth education classes, relaxation techniques, breathing techniques, and emotional support.

Third, the Bradley Method.

This is known as the husband-coached natural childbirth. This method says that education, preparation, and a coach can help mom give birth naturally. Mom must increase self-awareness, deal with the stress of labor, and trust her body. Mom learns about nutrition, exercise, breathing, and relaxation. This method teaches mom to be her own advocate in ways that decrease risk factors and interventions. There are books that teach this method, but the method promotes mom and dad attending a series of 12 weeks of classes before baby’s birth-day.

Fourth, the Bonapace Method.

This method teaches control of pain through massage, breathing, and visualization with a focus on trust. The goal is to decrease pain, decrease unnecessary interventions, and foster support from dad. This is an online class that can be taken at any time during pregnancy.

Fifth, hypnobirthing.

This is a bit out there for me to be talking about for birthing techniques. This method states: “In the absence of fear and tension, or special medical circumstances, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labor.” You will experience a mix of daydreaming and focusing. This method is to help you trust birth and release all fear and limiting thoughts.

Last, the PEAR Process at Pearently.

This four step process was created by me (Annabelle) from my own natural birth experience. It has now been proven to work for several Moms in their natural birth experiences. I teach you how to Plan, Engage, Anticipate & Adjust, and Resolve for your natural birth experience. I teach breathing and relaxation techniques and empower your birth coach to support you. I believe that Dad will be your best birth coach, but I also support other options. I believe Dad can be equipped to support you better than anyone else. Once he is empowered and you both trust each other, then you can adequately manage and cope with your pain. I prepare you to confidently waddle towards labor to have a natural birth experience.
