Now is the time to learn how to work with your natural hormones AND NOT disrupt the process. Now is the time to encourage the little chemical messengers that help you give birth naturally.

Now is the time to get ready for your birth journey. Take your next step by downloading the FREE workbook below to get Annabelle’s 4 Step Process to a birth you will love to remember.

Decisions you make about how you want your birth to happen can nurture or disrupt your body’s hormones that are important in labor and birth.

Let’s talk about the steps your body takes to birth your baby. These steps have to do with the hormones in charge of the birth of your baby. A ready baby and placenta might be what triggers labor. Your baby is going to release some chemicals that tell your body that he or she is ready to be born.

During this time, your body is going to release prostaglandins that help your cervix soften, open, and thin out.

Once your body and baby are ready, labor will begin!

Natural oxytocin increases during pregnancy, releases in pulses during labor, and peaks with birth of your baby. It is released into circulation for uterine contractions and released in cerebrospinal fluid to influence the brain for better bonding with baby.

Oxytocin will begin to be released in waves or pulses as stated above. Oxytocin gives mom nurturing behavior. Oxytocin evokes feelings of trust, empathy, calmness, contentment and reduces anxiety and fear.

Oxytocin…causes contractions, and those contractions lead to cervical change that speeds labor along.

Unfortunately, oxytocin can be disrupted by epidural analgesia because of the actual medication as well as the fact that it takes away mom’s pain (no pain = no oxytocin)

Synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin) is often given to moms that have epidurals placed during labor. Pitocin is released into circulation to cause contractions, but it is not released into the cerebrospinal fluid. This steals the feelings of trust, empathy, calmness, and contentment from mom during childbirth.

Endorphins are released during natural childbirth in response to oxytocin and pain. Endorphins give mom an altered state of consciousness to help her cope with labor pain. They help mom feel alert and happy after birth.

Unfortunately, endorphins are also disrupted by epidural analgesia and the drop in endorphins is thought to cause postpartum blues.

Adrenaline can be released during labor if mom feels anxious and unsafe. Adrenaline is released for survival mode, and it can slow labor until mom can get into a safe environment for birth. Unfortunately, adrenaline can slow labor, cause more pain, and distress baby. Adrenaline released in the first stage of labor is not desirable.

However, it is good if a little bit of adrenaline is released during the second stage of labor (pushing). It gives mom a burst of energy to effectively push.

We want to learn as Mamas how to promote these hormones at the right times during childbirth.

How to promote these hormones?

  • Preparedness of mind and a good supportive team (birth coach)
  • Calm, quiet, dark environment at home and at your birthing location
    • What is your environment at home and at a birthing location?
    • Are you prepared to say NO to interventions that make you feel uncomfortable or put you in more pain?
  • Say “NO” to pain-reducing medications like the epidural.

Now is the time to get ready for your birth journey. Take your next step by downloading the FREE workbook below to get Annabelle’s 4 Step Process to a birth you will love to remember.

I am going to be talking about reasons to give birth without pain-reducing medication so that you can have a beautiful birth experience and pave the way for great bonding with your child. I am going to be sharing pros and cons of a med-free birth and give you the tips you need to give birth naturally.

Before I go any further, I want to mention my FREE Natural Birth Workbook! This 4 Step Process is a great start if you are considering a med-free birth. Click the button below to download the workbook…

Why it is important to give birth without pain reducing meds like an epidural. For each woman the reason is a little bit different. I want to give you some reasons to ponder. Birth is not an easy task. And I want you to know that I know this.

I know it is hard, but I know you can do it, and I want you to know that I am here to support you.

Labor and birth have become known as an abnormal event that causes pain and needs a lot of interventions such as epidurals, monitors, cervical checks, assisted deliveries, and more.

But I want you to think of birth a little bit differently. You are naturally capable of giving birth because you have an intuitive instinct to give birth. You are able to give birth without all of the interventions deemed necessary. You can get the support you need and be comforted through your natural birth process so that it is not a suffering birth process.

Giving birth naturally (vaginally and without pain-reducing meds) is the best for Mom.

I know that is a bold statement because if I am saying that vaginal, med-free birth is best, then everything else must be subpar. That is exactly what I am saying.

C-Section births are not best because they put mom and baby at risk for infection, slower healing process, and complications with breastfeeding success and bonding. C-Sections should not be the first line of care. They are saved for emergency situations.

Epidurals put mom in bed with constant stimulations. This decreases the size of the pelvic outlet (EXIT), which makes labor a bit more difficult. The stimulation disrupts the physiologic (normal) hormone processes that help labor to progress.

So, now Mom has a slower and longer labor.

There are times when epidurals, C-Sections, and assisted deliveries are necessary, and I want to make it clear that I am not putting these down. Each woman has a different situation.

But I am here to tell you that amazing events happen in the body when a women lets her primal personality come out to give birth naturally.

Things such as listening to they body, move with contractions, open up the hips and pelvis to make room for baby to move down into the birth canal, faster labor progression than with an epidural, decreased sense of pain, elated feeling, prevention of hemorrhage, and long-term bonding with baby.

Crazy bonding! Not just the first few weeks or months, but years. Seriously, we get bonding results with our children into adulthood. Research is showing these results!

Giving birth naturally is just a step at the beginning, a hard step that helps us do hard things as our children grow and we have to parent them through difficult situations.

We get results because we chose to do something good for ourselves and our baby from the beginning.

What this hormone I mentioned?

It is Oxytocin, natures love hormone. AND oxytocin causes contractions.

Wait, I just said it is a love hormone. Yes, we all have oxytocin released daily when we see someone we love, when we love on our children, or when we have sex with our husband. This hormone is great.

It is gradually increasing throughout pregnancy, and then it peaks at birth.

Huge waves of oxytocin release from your brain and travel down to your uterus to cause it to contract. Most people think of oxytocin only causing contractions and pain in labor, but this chemical does way more than one thing at a time. Oxytocin has a huge effect on your brain to cause bonding and trust between you and baby.

As the pain of the contractions increases, your body will also release endorphins to inhibit some oxytocin, take you into primal thinking, put you into a dream-like state, and decrease your pain perception because endorphins are nature’s own morphine.

Your birth will continue, the oxytocin will peak, and mom will get the greatest feelings toward her baby.

We know this and see this when birth is complete…Mom is elated and in love with her prize. This leads to a sense of well-being in mom and baby. As mom and baby bond with skin-to-skin, baby has a sense of well-being which research shows is more important than food itself for the growth and development of the baby.

Whoa, that was a lot, and I hope it all made sense.

I want to add one thing about oxytocin. I want to talk about induction or augmentation of labor with Pitocin. The medication Pitocin (synthetic oxytocin) is administered through the vein and travels to the uterus to cause contractions. Pitocin does not travel across the barrier in the brain. So, mom does not get the full benefit of oxytocin in this way.

Many moms that have to have their labor induced try to give birth with the medication Pitocin and no epidural. The medication is administered very fast compared to naturally occurring oxytocin, and many moms cannot handle that level of persistent pain.

As I said naturally occurring oxytocin is released in waves. Some contractions are more painful than others.

Pitocin is not this way. Contractions become stronger and stronger with little breaks. This is very hard to cope with in labor, and an epidural is naturally requested. The epidural can further inhibit natural oxytocin effects, and this interrupts the full bonding effect of mom and baby.

I would love to discuss methods to prevent this from happening to you if you are interested.

You have been growing your baby through these past months, and there have been ups and downs. I mean admit it, it has not been easy.

Birth will be the climax of your pregnancy journey, and it is a steeper journey than ever before. So, mentally prepare yourself for that.

But you know that you got this far, and you can get to the top of this mountain to claim the victory.

You can do this!

Hey Mama! Are you thinking about childbirth?

What is on your mind: joy, excitement, anticipation… or FEAR?

I like to start with honestly and openness. Fear of childbirth is not uncommon. Let’s be honest, PAIN is scary!

Sadly, FEAR of labor and birth is not a widely addressed topic in the United States. Some studies show that 50% of women in the U.S. suffer significant fear when thinking about birth!

That means that approximately 2 million women are pregnant right now and are filled with fear of what is to come. That data is even a bit skewed by demographics, which means that it is probably MORE than 50%

WHAT?! Something we have been doing since the beginning of time, and we feel helpless here.

FEAR of baby’s birth-day is a problem that needs to be addressed by doctors and nurses. And yes, that is what we are going to talk about today.

Another thing that we need to clarify is that unaddressed fear is not okay to continue to be ignored. FEAR does not only affect you, Mama, it also affects your baby’s health. Fear can lead to fetal distress (baby distress), long and challenging labor, arrest of labor (cervix stops dilating), greater risk for C-Section, and postpartum blues.

These are terrible effects from something that can be managed. You just need someone to coach you through the process and remind you that you were created to do this!

First, it is important to think about your own fears…

  • Labor PAIN!
  • Baby’s health and safety
  • Complications in labor
  • Ability to communicate your needs with the doctor, nurses, midwife…
  • Not feeling heard and having your birth plan respected
  • Not understanding your options (you can say NO to unnecessary interventions)
  • Not knowing where baby goes after birth
  • And the list continues…

Your healthcare providers absolutely know that your emotional needs are important.

BUT doctors and midwives are busy.

They don’t spend time caring for your psychosocial aspect of pregnancy, labor, and birth.

This means that your doctor knows that you have FEARS, but he/she just doesn’t have time to help you cope or overcome those fears.

So, what do you do? Start searching the internet for answers? Yes, that is an option. But the internet is filled with more information than you really want, and then you get more overwhelmed and scared.

Maybe you start talking to friends and family members. But that was her birth experience. You are different, you are unique. Her story scares you more. Maybe she is just being overly dramatic and negative.

You need someone who has medical training, experience, and the wisdom to communicate your roadmap clearly with empathy. You need someone who has hiked this mountain before and will gently take your hand to guide you on the trail.

I have an answer for you. You don’t have to allow your FEARS to grow and be harmful to you or your baby. You can have your concerns addressed from the experience of an experienced nurse, birth doula, and Mom.

deeply believe that you need coaching in this journey. You need coaching to overcome your fears and understand that you can handle the pain in birth. You need support and guidance because you can have a beautiful birth memory. I will help alleviate your fears, and give you the guidance that you need to be confident in birth.

Question of the day: Can I labor without an epidural?

I am here to tell you, “YES! You Can!” Let’s talk about how to make your dream of a natural birth a reality!

Hey Mama, I’m Annabelle, nurse, birth doula, and Mom. I want to start by saying there is no competition here, ONLY encouragement.

The natural birth process without pain medicine is a beautiful process. The pain and the hard work is part of what really helps you connect with your newborn baby.

I want you to STOP and image… the two of you have just gone through this hard, long, and incredible journey together. Now you are both on the other side of that mountain celebrating your natural birth victory together!

How does that make you feel? Is that what you want? Well, let’s get it for you then!

Before I go any further, I want to mention my FREE Natural Birth Workbook! This 4 Step Process is a great start if you are considering a med-free birth. Click the button below to download the workbook…

It takes A LOT more than just walking into the hospital with the idea of having a natural birth (without an epidural). It takes power and preparation: body, mind, and soul preparation.

So, I personally would love to (well, I am going to) encourage you on this journey to having a natural birth.

About eighty percent of women in the U.S. deliver their babies with an epidural in place. There is a reason for this. Labor and birth are hard, but more, it is scary because it is unknownBut that doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Actually, I KNOW you can do it. You just need prep work, and we can help you with that.

I’m going to start with my journey because it may sound like yours right now.

I had A LOT of women telling me that I could NOT birth my baby without an epidural. They didn’t say it directly that way, they would tell me that they were the same way. They wanted a natural birth, but when they got to ______ hours of labor they just had to say, “Heck with it. Get me that epidural.”

That was HARD for me to hear because I knew I WANTED to give birth ‘naturally’. I knew I was made to deliver my baby FEARLESSLY. Plus, women all over the world (for thousands of years) have been birthing babies without an epidural!

I had to have a strategic path to follow, and I created it myself.

This is my PEAR Process that has worked for so many women giving birth naturally: Plan, Engage, Anticipate & Adjust, and Resolve. This process takes you from where you are right now in your pregnancy and guides you through each step that will transform the way you think about birth and the way you give birth.

What About You?

Where are you getting support from to go on this birth journey ahead? You need someone to stand by your side, encourage you, and give you the power to birth your baby confidently and have a great birth memory to go along with all of that.

Who is encouraging you?

Mommy encouragement is so important to each Mom in pregnancy and birth.

Birth is hard, and we Moms don’t need other Moms telling us their horror stories.

That is why I believe that childbirth classes should include community for the Moms in the class. Moms need to hear words of encouragement from other Moms that are pursuing natural birth too!

Thousands of women around the world are birthing their babies without pain medicine. There is something to be said about that kind of courage. And those are the stories I want Moms to hear about. I want Moms that are like-minded to tell other Moms that they are pursuing this natural birth journey.

So, I encourage you to find that source of encouragement. Maybe it is here with me and other Moms that are taking my online birth course.

Your first step towards this type of birth journey is to download my free workbook. I have created my FREE Natural Birth Workbook just for you. This 4 Step Process is a great start if you are considering a med-free birth. Download below…
