This is all about the beautiful process of conception - how a baby is made in the womb. Dr. Boyd walks you through each step of the process of conception in an EASY to understand way.

It is fun to discuss the process of getting pregnant. Let’s take some time to help you visualize what your body is doing as your baby is created in your womb! The timeline of menstrual cycle, ovulation, hormone release, and body preparation are all very important in the process of making your baby.

Pregnancy starts deep within the brain inside of an organ called the hypothalamus. These are chemical hormones released from the brain that tell the ovaries to release the egg and the uterus to get ready for the conceived embryo (your baby!).

Now, in a given menstrual cycle you ovulate approximately 14 days after your last period. Ovulation occurs (your egg is released) and then a single sperm will penetrate the egg to fertilize it (life is created).

The cell that is formed by the egg and the sperm joining together is called a zygote. That zygote starts to divide rapidly! As it divides, it starts to move down the fallopian tube, and then it ends in the uterus where it will grow and develop over the next few months.

The uterus was ready for the newly conceived zygote. The zygote takes time to burrow itself into the uterine wall, and this can sometimes cause bleeding (implantation bleeding!).

►►►Click the link below to download our free 3 Step Guide to Getting Pregnant!

Conceiving a baby is a whole body workout. Pregnancy involves the brain, and it involves you having normal anatomy (normal body parts that work for pregnancy: hormone balance, vagina, ovaries, fallopian tube, uterus, and even breasts).

You have to have normal anatomy to get pregnant: a vagina that is connected to the uterus, a cervix that is open so the sperm can swim up into the uterus, a uterus that will allow the sperm to get through to the fallopian tube, and a uterus that can carry the baby.

Speaking of the fallopian tube, many woman wonder if they can conceive with only one fallopian tube. The answer is, “YES!”. The body almost universally has two fallopian tubes, but there are some women that were born with only one fallopian tube, or they have lost a fallopian tube to a previous ectopic or tubal pregnancy. Ovulation from the ovary with the release of an egg travels to ONE fallopian tube, not two. So, all you need is one working tube to carry an egg towards the sperm and uterus. Yay!

So, just like many things in life, any abnormality with that anatomical process can prevent you from getting pregnant. It is important to talk to your healthcare provider and know your anatomy.

Now, the other issue that can prevent you from getting pregnant is the hormonal aspect. I mentioned previously that the whole process of your hormones starts deep in your brain at a structure called the hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus is a gland that releases hormones to another part of your brain called your pituitary and the your pituitary releases hormones to your ovaries and then on to your uterus. These hormones are essential when it comes to conception because they are the start of the entire process. It is very important to keep your hormones in balance with healthy food choices, exercise, and meditation with a peace of mind. Talk to your healthcare provider about any concerns that you have with your hormone levels and balance.

As you can see the process of getting pregnant can be very complicated! If you are concerned that you may have abnormal anatomy, imbalanced hormones, or any signs of infertility, then I would recommend that you talk to your healthcare provider.

However, I want to give you a peace of mind: 90% of women do not have any issues getting pregnant!

Give yourself time, eat good foods, get outside for some activity and sunshine, and enjoy life with meditation, prayer, intimacy, travel, and more!

Best wishes to you on this journey!

We hope to see you soon at Pearently!

He ladies, you want to know how you can get pregnant (but you have irregular periods), right? Well, we are talking about and helping you through the way to get on regular cycles and get pregnant faster…

Side note: let’s talk about the fact that planning is so important when it comes to pregnancy. Getting pregnant can take time, and it is easy to get frustrated when it doesn’t happen today. But we want to encourage you to take this time to plan, which will help you control your anxiety and frustration when it doesn’t happen this month.

First, we are going to dive into two BIG reasons why some women have irregular periods and aren’t getting pregnant:

1. Birth control – Specifically form that change your hormones so that you do not ovulate.

The Birth Control Pill does this. So, you decide to stop taking the pill because you want to get pregnant. Unfortunately, it can take your body up to one year before regular cycles and ovulation returns after you stop taking the pill. This is where planning comes into play (if you are reading this and have not stopped taking the pill yet).

Depo-Provera injections and Implanon/Nexplanon implants can delay ovulation even further. Some women do not begin to ovulate for 18 months after stopping these two forms of birth control.

2. Body Mass Index (BMI)

If you have a low BMI (less than 18) or a high BMI (greater than 30), then your hormones may be out of balance.

This can mean that you have irregular periods and not ovulate.

It is possible to ovulate even if you have irregular periods, BUT it is very difficult to determine WHEN ovulation occurs (it is a shot in the dark, literally). The only positive test is…well, if you get pregnant. You could use an ovulation predictor kit or you could have sex everyday, but that gets expensive and exhausting.

Talk to your healthcare provider about concerns that you have with your weight and fertility.

Let’s get reasonable and scientific here. Let’s help you get regular with your cycles and accurately calculate your fertility window (a range of  days when you probably will ovulate).

It is important to note that a regular period is somewhat specialized to you. The textbook states that a 28-day cycle is regular (but that is for the perfect woman, and who can or would want to live up to that?).

So, back to regular for you: You need to mark on your calendar when you begin one cycle (the first day you see blood), and then count to the first day of your next cycle (the first day you see blood).

How many days was that? Is your next cycle the same as your last? How about the last, last cycle?

This is predictable, consistent, and it means you are regular. This is YOUR regular.

Now that you understand regular, let’s talk about ovulation. And we are back to the perfect woman who has a 28-day cycle. She may ovulate on day 14. But we want to give her some wiggle room. She has a fertile window. Her fertile window is the time period that she may ovulate within if she doesn’t ovulate on day 14. Her fertile window is day 10 to 18. She and her husband should have sex every 48-hours starting on day 10 through day 18.

Does this seem complicated? We have a guide for you to download that will do the math for you (even if you don’t have a 28-day cycle).

Also, we know that it can be easy and difficult to regulate your cycles before trying to conceive.

We want to help you regulate your cycles naturally!

Dr. Boyd recommends the best way to regulate your cycle naturally is with the hormone progesterone. This is a natural chemical hormone that is supposed to be released in your body in a very specific amount for optimal health in fertility. Talk to your doctor about how much progesterone you need to regulate your cycles.

We would love to answer any questions that you may have. Watch our video on this topic and ask your questions in the comment section. We will get back to you shortly.

Best wishes on conceiving!

Hey ladies, you are here because you want to know how long after your miscarriage you have to wait to get pregnant again, right?

The real question is…”When will I begin to ovulate again after my miscarriage?” You will ovulate approximately 4-6 weeks after miscarriage! Wow, so soon.

You CAN ovulate as soon as 2 weeks after your miscarriage, but it can also take as long as 3 months. But the average is 4-6 weeks.

Hear me out, Ladies, it is NOT recommended that you get pregnant so soon after miscarriage. Most healthcare providers recommend that you wait 6 months before getting trying to conceive again.

This is because you are at greater risk for another miscarriage if you conceive too early.

The miscarriage rate is twenty-percent (one in five women miscarry). However, this percentage is much higher if you conceive before the six month mark.

I recommend that you to chat with your healthcare provider about some viable options for contraception during the first few months after miscarriage.

Download our 3 Step Guide to Getting Pregnant when you are ready to conceive again

We wish you the best on your emotional and physical recovery from the loss of your baby.

Many women are concerned about bleeding or spotting and its effect on pregnancy. Let’s talk about the possible causes of mid-cycle bleeding.

3 possible causes of mid-cycle spotting:

1. Ovulation bleeding

Your egg is released from your ovary. This can cause spotting and some lower uterine cramping or discomfort. It should not cause severe pain or severe bleeding. *Ovulation bleeding only happens in a small number of women.

2. Implantation bleeding

This usually occurs 3 – 7 days after ovulation. The fertilized egg (your baby) starts to burrow itself into the uterine wall thus creating a healthy environment for development and growth.

3. Early menstrual bleed

Even if you have had “regular” cycles your entire life, you can sometimes bleed early. For example, if you have 28-day cycles, you could start bleeding on day 25. This simply means your cycle came early.

If you are trying to get pregnant, we can help!

Our guide will walk you through each step of the process and markedly increase your chances of getting pregnant.

How often do you REALLY need to have sex to get pregnant?

I am a guy, and I understand that guys have a different answer than women do. You are thinking that you just need the sperm to get pregnant. You may think the magic number is to have sex everyday of the year in order to successfully get pregnant.

And the guy says, “great!” But this is not true. Men will experience performance anxiety if he tries to have sex everyday of the month.

Men think they should have sex every day, but that really isn’t the best practice for successful conception.

Performance anxiety exists, and he will not be able to ejaculate when you need him to ejaculate. So, the optimal time to have sex is every 48-hours in order to successfully conceive.

It is NOT every two days. Your egg lasts 12-24 hours, and the sperm lasts 48-hours. If you and your husband have sex on Monday morning, and then again on Wednesday night, the sperm from Monday morning will be dead on Wednesday morning (48- hours).

Say that you ovulate Wednesday morning. The sperm from Monday morning will not be able to fertilize your egg because they are dead. Your egg will last for 12-24 hours.

However, assume that it will only last 12-hours. So, if you ovulate Wednesday morning at 7:00 am, then assume that your egg will die by Wednesday at 7:00 pm. You have sex Wednesday night at 10:00 pm. You have missed your opportunity to conceive.

This is emotional, and you may think you have a fertility problem. You don’t have a problem, you just missed your opportunity.

You can do this, it just takes a little bit of focus.

Don’t set the clock, continue to enjoy the intimacy, and download our 3 Step Guide To Getting Pregnant.

I wish you the best on your journey towards pregnancy.

How to use your menstrual period to determine when you ovulate?

***NOTE: Most providers say that the ovulation range is -7 / +7 days from the middle of your cycle. This is true, but it is a broad range (especially when considering intercourse for that many days per month). Therefore, this video gives you a more realistic range for ovulation and intercourse to successfully conceive.

Hey, Dr. Boyd here. I have some tips for you as you use your menstrual period to determine when you ovulate.

First, if you don’t ovulate, then you will not get pregnant.

So, I am talking to women that ovulate…

If you determine when you ovulate, then you can gauge when to have sex in order to get pregnant.

Ovulation usually happens in the mid-part of your cycle. What does that mean? We are going to use three examples to demonstrate what this means.

The perfect woman (if she were to exist) has a 28-day cycle. This means that the end of one cycle to the beginning of the next cycle is a 28-day period of time.

Day 1 is the first day she sees any blood, even if it is light spotting. This woman will ovulate approximately 14 days before that bleeding begins.

She might ovulate on day 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, or 17. This woman should begin to have sex on day 10, and have sex every 48-hours for the optimal sperm count.

This means that she should have sex on day 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 (he gets an extra day).

Now let’s give the example of the woman with the 21-day cycle. This woman might ovulate any day from day 7 through day 14. She should have sex on day 7, 9 , 11, 13, and 15 (he gets an extra day).

How about the woman with the 35-day cycle? She may ovulate on day 14 through day 21. She should optimally have sex on day 14, 16, 18, 20, and 22 (he gets an extra day).

Why is 48-hours important and not every 2 days?

Say the woman ovulates on day 14 (Wednesday morning at 7:00 am). Her egg may die by 7:00 pm on Wednesday night.

*The egg may last until the next morning at 7:00 am, but it is safe to say that it will die in 12 hours.

If this woman has sex on Monday morning, then most of the man’s sperm will be dead within 48-hours.

So, if she has sex at 5:00 am on Monday morning, then most of his sperm is dead by Wednesday morning at 5:00 am.

Say the woman ovulates at 7:00 am on Wednesday morning. If they don’t have sex in the next 12 – 24 hours then she will not conceive. So, it is very important to have sex in the 48-hour time period.

Don’t set a timer, because he won’t forget. Make a game out of it, and continue to have intimacy in the bed.

I wish you the best on your journey towards pregnancy. When you get pregnant you may need some help preparing for birth.

Let’s dive into this topic: what is the best time to have sex to increase my chances of getting pregnant?

In order to understand how to time ‘getting pregnant’, we need to determine two key players:

  1. When is your menstrual period?
  2. When will you ovulate as it relates to your period?

If you can answer these two questions, then you have a far better chance of determining the best time to have sex to get pregnant.

1. Your period (menstrual cycle)

Day one of your period is the first day you see ANY blood. That could be spotting or a steady flow.

Now, for the purpose of helping you understand ovulation as it relates to your period, we are going to use the example of a woman that has a 28-day cycle. That means from the first day of her period to the next first day of her period is 28-day interval.

That specific woman will ovulate around day 14. That is a VERY specific day, and NO woman will follow that pattern every single month. So, we must establish an estimated date range. This is called an ovulatory period (or fertile window).

Go to the mid part of her cycle, which is day 14 of a 28-day cycle. Subtract 7 days and add 7 days. That means the ovulatory period of a woman with a 28-day cycle is day 7 – 21. Next is determining the best time for intercourse.

*This is a broad range of days to have sex. In fact, most men experience performance anxiety when they have to have sex this many days in a month. So, there is a better way to calculate your ovulation period and when to have sex based on those days.

Download our 3 Step Guide to Getting Pregnant.
We will walk you through exactly how to calculate your own ovulatory period!
Now, what is the game plan for having sex to get pregnant?

Pull out a calendar, and mark your ovulatory period (fertile window). Write “sex” on day one at a very specific time of your ovulatory period. Count forward 48-hours and mark “sex” again.

Get together with your husband on those marked times! *I want to warn you NOT to make this a chore. Keep it fun and intimate with your spouse. Make it a game, not work.

Back to the classroom. After ejaculation, you (woman) should lay on your back with your pelvis elevated for 15 – 20 minutes. This will assist the sperm with swimming up into the vagina, cervix, uterus, and ultimately reach the fallopian tube where the egg is waiting to be fertilized.

And that is how to successfully conceive.

I want to encourage some women here. It you started trying to conceive over the past few months and have been unsuccessful, please do not be discouraged.

It can take up to 12 months to get pregnant before clinicians address infertility.

On average it takes most women 3 – 6 months to get pregnant. So, download the FREE guide, identify your fertile window, decrease your stress levels, and have fun in bed.

Best wishes,

Dr. Boyd

The question today: how many days after your period can you get pregnant?

The answer to this question is VERY simple, but achieving the result can sometimes prove rather complex. Theoretically, you can get pregnant the next day, or the next, or maybe the day after that, or even twelve days after that…

Ok, I don’t mean to egg you on, but I am trying to show you that it is NOT a perfect science. However, I am going to walk you through a plan, and if you follow this plan you will significantly increase your chances of getting pregnant!

Download our 3 Step Guide to Getting Pregnant. This guide will help you understand and calculate your ovulatory period! (Click the green button below.)

I am going to set up two scenarios to help you understand the process of ovulation and the optimal time to get pregnant after your period.

*This is a broad range of dates for possible ovulation. In fact, when couples plan to have sex based on this range of dates, most men experience performance anxiety (have to have sex this many days in a month). So, there is a better way to calculate your ovulation period and timing of sex.

We are going to look at a woman that has a 21 day cycle and a woman that has a 28 day cycle. We are going to compare those two women as it relates to ovulation after her menstrual cycle (period).

First, let me say that ‘menstrual cycle’ is a bleed, and the first day of your cycle is the day you see any blood, that is called day 1. It means that you did not get pregnant, and you are passing the tissue from inside of your uterus that was preparing for a pregnancy.

Count from that point to day 1 of your next cycle. That is your intermenstrual cycle, which is usually 21 – 35 days for most women, and it is considered a ‘normal cycle’.

Most women follow the same pattern, which means your cycle is predicable. If your cycles are all over the place (21 days then to 48 days, and back to 24 days, etc…), then you are most likely not ovulating. I encourage you to talk to your healthcare provider about a remedy to your inconsistent cycles.

**Read my post about regulating your cycles. CLICK HERE –> https://pearently.com/how-to-get-pregnant-faster-with-irregular-periods/

21-day cycles

The intermenstrual cycle is 21-days. You should ovulate around day 7.

The cycle is 21 days. Subtract 14 days from 21, and that equals day 7. However, that does not necessarily mean that you will ovulate ON day 7. The next step is to subtract 5 days from day 7, and add 5 days to day 7. So, potentially you are ovulating from day 2 up until day 12, and this is your ovulatory period (fertile window)!

28-day cycles

The intermenstrual cycle is 28-days. You should ovulate around day 14.

The cycle is 28 days. Ovulation is calculated when you subtract 14 days from 28, and that equals day 14. Your ovulatory period is day 7 – 21.

DOWNLOAD our FREE guide for more details or if you have a different intermenstrual cycle than the ones listed above.

Now we can talk about the fun part, sex.

Get together with your husband, and let him know that sex is going to happen every 48-hours starting on day _____ until day _____ (ovulatory period/fertile window discussed above).

It is crucial that intercourse happens every 48-hours, NOT every 2 days. The sperm has a life span of 48-hours, and the egg lives 12-24 hours (I always recommend that you think of the egg only lasting 12 hours for best results). So, 48-hours means that the sperm will be fresh and healthy to meet the egg for fertilization to occur.

Write your days down, or don’t because he won’t forget when the intimacy gets to happen. Try to have fun in this time. I know it can be stressful when you want to be pregnant NOW. But enjoy this time, and it will happen soon. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have further concerns.

I wish you the best on you journey towards pregnancy.

When you get pregnant, delivery day will come fast! I recommend making a plan for a smooth and successful vaginal birth.

"How do I relate my period to ovulation and pregnancy?"

Hey, Dr. Boyd here. I am going to use a 28-day period/cycle to explain. The first day of your period is called day 1. The day you see any blood at all is day 1 of your period.

*You don’t have a 28-day cycle? We will do the math for you. Download our FREE guide below.

Ovulation will optimally take place on day 14. So, day 1 is the first day you see blood and then you count ahead to day 14. That is around the time you will ovulate. However, that is too specific. So, you need an ovulatory period (fertile window).

Ovulation occurs on day-14 on this 28-day cycle. Subtract 7 days from 14 days for day 7 of your cycle. Add 7 days to day 14 and that is day 21 of your cycle. Your ovulatory period on a 28-day cycle is day 7 – 21.

It is recommended to start having sex on day 7 and then every 48-hours from that first day.

*This is a broad range of dates for possible ovulation. Every 48-hours for sexual intercourse is recommended rather than every 24-hours because men can experience performance anxiety.

Let the fun begin.

Get together with your husband on day 7 of your ovulatory period, and have sex every 48-hours from day 7 to day 21. Make sure you plan on intercourse every 48-hours, NOT every 2 days. This is important because of the fragile lifespan of the sperm and the egg. Have fun with it, try to relax, and be ready for a positive pregnancy test.

You should be looking forward to a successful pregnancy within 3 – 6 months. But be ready to be pregnant within the first month of implementing this plan. It is also important to note that statistically, it could take up to 12 months to get pregnant.

Best wishes on your journey towards pregnancy.
